An Effective Way of Improving Cardiovascular Health by Lowering
Triglycerides, Cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein and raising HDL

Many people have a propensity towards high blood triglycerides (TG), high cholesterol, low HDL, high LDL, and high VLDLP (very low density lipoprotein). This may be due to genetics or simply due to poor diets. In my case it is genetics, as I eat healthy foods. I naturally have high HDL (baseline for me was about 70 five years ago), high total cholesterol, and very high triglycerides. In fact, my TG was never below 300 during the first 65 years of my life!
Now, everything has changed for me due to taking certain supplements, exercising, avoiding sugar and carbohydrates, and reducing alcohol consumption. I have completely changed my blood lipid profile. A note on alcohol: I still have 2 to three drinks a day, but it is always spread out. I choose alcohol without sugar in it, and I dilute it with lots of Perrier. Remember, sweet drinks and beer contain loads of sugar and will absolutely raise TG.
What do my results look like after years of taking 1.0 gram of Aker krill oil a day? My triglycerides are below 130, cholesterol is 180 to 200 (which is okay), but my HDL’s are now 150. My doctor was in shock because I take no statins or other cholesterol lowering drugs, except for Zetia (Merck), which is not a statin.
This article and video is about an amazing new discovery and development that I was privileged to work with and I believe will revolutionize the way we approach high TG, high cholesterol, and low HDLP in an even more potent way.
The new product is EPA/DHA Free Fatty Acid (FFA) complexed with Lysine, a natural essential amino acid. It could be viewed as EPA/DHA FFA/Lysine complex. There will obviously be trademarks for this coming out soon. One company, Be Whole (http://www.bewhole.com/), will launch a cardiovascular health product called AlphaOmega-3™ later this summer based on this remarkable new breakthrough.
Everybody already knows that fish oil triglycerides (FOTG) in very high doses, Fish oil ethyl esters (FOEE, Lovaza™) in very high doses, and krill oil in low to moderate doses will lower triglycerides, lower cholesterol, and generally raise HDL. The newest product approved by the US FDA is Epanova™, a super bioavailable EPA/DHA FFA that can dramatically lower TG, but has issues and is expensive.
All of the products listed below have issues except for the new EPA/DHA FFA/Lysine complex:
- Fish Oil TG: An oil. Has odor issues, and high doses are needed. Only 34% to 40% bioavailable. Causes burp-back, rancidity, acid reflux. Sustainability issues. Not stable. In some cases, thereare heavy metal issues like mercury.
- Fish Oil EE (Lovaza, drug): It is a liquid. Has odor issues, and very high doses needed (up to 3.0grams/day). Causes burp back, acid reflux, and diarrhea. Amazingly, not as bioavailable as fish oil(less than 35%). It has ecological sustainability issues. Not stable; goes rancid relatively quickly.
- Krill oil: Liquid with some odor issues. Low to moderate doses needed. Causes no burp-back, is ashell fish product, and has some (but far fewer) manageable sustainability issues. Effective andstable. Bioavailability is over 70%.
- EPADHA FFA/Lysine Complex: A powder that is 95% to 98% bioavailable. Has no odor, and is direct compressible. Does not cause acid reflux. Not prone to rancidity, and also provides the essential amino acid Lysine which has its own set of health benefits: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysine (Soon to be available as a vegetarian formula):
- Fish Oil FFA (Epanova™): Low to moderate doses needed. Has stability issues, rancidification issues, odor issues and burp-back. Most common side effects are stomach upset and diarrhea. Highly bioavailable (over 95%).
In a landmark paper (https://www.lipid.org/sites/default/files/12-_brinton_eliot.pdf), Dr. Eliot Brinton presents an extensive presentation on why fish oil and fish oil FFA (Epanova) therapy works better than statin drugs alone in lowering triglycerides. Statins alone do not prevent all cardiovascular events. The residual risk is still 50% to 70% of having a cardio event (heart attack) even if you are on statins, simply because they do not lower triglycerides enough. Therefore, the use of fish oil derivatives becomes a major consideration, either as stand-alone therapy or combined with statins to prevent cardiovascular death.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has published a paper comparing the bioavailability of FOEE, FOTG and EPA/DHA FFA- or as they say, CA for Carboxylic acid. The paper (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5161399/) clearly shows that free fatty acid of fish oil is 6 to 7 times more bio-available than Lovaza EPA/DHA Ethyl Ester, a known FDA approved pharmaceutical drug used to dramatically lower TG.
For me, consideration of the above facts leads to the conclusion that there are only two realistic supplements to attack cholesterol and triglycerides. They are:
- The new product I am introducing- EPA/DHA FFA/Glycine complex
- Moderate doses of krill oil. Be Whole is introducing EPA/DHA FFA/Lysine in a formulated form asAlphaOmega-3 and it is squarely targeting cardiovascular health. The product will be available in the late summer of 2017 (http://www.bewhole.com/).

In other words, EPA/DHA FFA/Lysine complex has 2 to 3 times more EPA/DHA, but is also over 30% more bioavailable than krill, a remarkable achievement. These effects are additive.
Even more exciting is that EPA/DHA FFA/Lysine complex will be available in about a year in a totally vegetarian form, but I recommend vegetarians to give the AlphaOmega-3 a try as is. There is no fishy odor, no burp-back , no GI issues, and it has amazing health benefits.
I do have some general concerns about strictly vegetarian diets, because of data that I have seen that indicates that vegans and many vegetarians (excluding ovo and lacto vegetarians) have a much higher risk of cardiovascular events and strokes compared to people with moderate amounts of meat in their diets. However, I do note that vegans and vegetarians have fewer “other” diseases like cancer. I believe that the reason for higher cardio and stroke events for vegans is, in part, because of:
- They have too many carbohydrates in their diet, including too much fruit (not berries) and fructose, often leading to high TG.
- They have too much Omega-6 in their diets from sunflower, soy, corn, or other vegetable-based oils (olive oil and canola oil is okay). Not enough saturated fats in their diet like coconut oil or palm oil.
- There is low-quality protein in their diet. Egg white protein has an amino acid/protein score of 130. That is to say it is almost identical to human protein and thus optimally used. Whey protein has a score of 105, partially DEFATTED chia oil Chia Max from Valensa has a score of 115, but pea protein has a score of only 30. Eating protein like pea protein is unhealthy because most of the amino acids in this product cannot be utilized to build human protein. It simply gets excreted or burned for energy. Pea protein energy is bad energy because this produces uric acid as a byproduct, which has health impacts like gout.
- Often I have also seen cases where there is too much ALA in strict vegetarian diets. While ALA is healthy, eating too much flax oil, ground flax seeds (caution cyanogenic glucosides), ground chia seeds, and chia oil at levels over 4 grams a day is very dangerous and can lead to excessive bruising and bleeding, especially in menstruating women.
I am very excited about the new EPA/DHA Free Fatty Acid/Lysine complex for cardiovascular health. In addition, formulation work is going on to make versions for boosting immunity, eye health, supplemental vitamins, and sports nutrition.
